Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings

Krishnamacharya Book

Description: Here is a personal tribute to “the father of modern yoga” Sri Tirumalai Krishnamacharya (1888–1989), written by one of his longtime disciples. Krishnamacharya was a renowned Indian yoga master, Ayurvedic healer, and scholar who modernized yoga practice and whose students — including B. K. S. Iyengar, K. Pattabhi Jois, T. K. V. Desikachar, and Indra Devi — dramatically popularized yoga in the West.

In this book, the author, A. G. Mohan, a well–respected yoga teacher and yoga therapist, draws on his own memories and Krishnamacharya’s diaries and recorded material, to present a fascinating view of the man and his teachings, and Mohan’s own warm and inspiring relationship with the master. This portrait of the great teacher will be a compelling and informative read for yoga teachers and students who truly want to understand the source of their tradition and practice.

Quotes:

“Preserving and passing on the teachings and traditions of his teacher, T. Krishnamacharya, was my grandfather’s life work. This book explains the legacy, and gives a better understanding into the life and work of a great master.”

– Sharath Rangaswamy, grandson of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

Krishnamacharya is absolutely delightful. It gives us an intimate window into the devotion, intensity, and clarity of the true source of modern yoga, Sri Krishnamacharya. A. G. Mohan gives us urgently needed lessons on the inner subtlety and depth of yoga.”

– Richard Freeman, author of The Mirror of Yoga.

“Very few students actually stayed with Krishnamacharya to study and carefully practice what he was offering; A. G. Mohan is one who did. Read this book because it is a fascinating window into a deeply personal relationship in the age old practice of yoga transmission and learning.”

– Mark Whitwell, author of Yoga of Heart.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga Therapy Book

Description: Authored by A.G. Mohan and Indra Mohan, this book explains the rational and authentic approach to the use of Yoga and Ayurveda for fitness and for therapy. The book adopts a logical and systematic approach. Applied points are derived from fundamental principles — the why is explained as well as the how.

Review in the Yoga Journal, March-April 2005:

“A long time student of the seminal 20th century yoga master T. Krishnamacharya, A.G. Mohan is well versed in the therapeutic applications of yoga practice. In their recent book, Yoga Therapy, he and his wife, Indra, offer one of the most accessible and useful guides to a yogic-Ayurvedic approach to wellness to be published in recent memory.

In a straightforward text, and hundreds of simple but illuminating drawings, the Mohans, co-founders of the Svastha Yoga Ayurveda Center in Chennai, India, outline a clear vision of “yoga and Ayurveda as therapy”.

Their opening section, “Yoga for Fitness”, includes introductions to yoga, Ayurveda and principles of movement and breathing — a terrain that is basic to practice and familiar to anyone who has taken more than a few classes, yet explicated in a way that makes the subject seem newly inviting and worth investigating.

The four chapters in their second section, “designing an Asana and Pranayama Practice”, probe the nuances of sequencing, “personalizing” asana practice, and breathwork.

The concluding section includes a chapter devoted to “Case Studies for the Yoga Therapist”, which is carefully circumscribed (major illnesses are not covered) yet nonetheless illustrates a sound method of applying yoga in specific therapeutic contexts.

Mr. Mohan has written several previous books, but this is the one that will most fully disseminate his knowledge to modern practitioners.”

Quotes:

“This is a must-have volume for any serious yoga student, whether a yoga therapist or just an everyday practitioner. The mix of both theoretical and practical information allows readers to learn not only about the daily work of yoga, but its essential theoretical underpinnings as well. The book reminds us that yoga is the original holistic health care system.”

– Richard Rosen, author of The Yoga of Breath.
